The Standard Model of Personal Finance: The Math, Elementary Constituents, and Interactions
Prof. Jonas Karthein
Department of Physics & Astronomy
Texas A&M University
As physicists, we optimize complex systems daily, yet often leave our own finances uncalibrated. This seminar provides a practical, math-based framework for managing a constrained academic stipend. We will cover the mechanics of cash flow, the exponential power of compound growth versus the parasitic drag of high-interest debt, and the structural advantages of index funds. Additionally, we will address the unique rules governing international scholars, including FICA exemptions, tax treaties, and why US retirement accounts can become administrative traps.
