A Career Cross Section: Navigating the Federal and Defense Sectors

Dr. Bryant Vande Kolk
(PhD class of 2021)
Sr. Principal Engineer
Northrop Grumman

While the traditional academic path remains a hallmark of doctoral training, the landscape for physics PhDs has evolved. Since the early 2000s, the share of physics PhD graduates securing roles in industry and government has increased, yet the transition from laboratory research to these sectors remains opaque for many. Dr. Bryant Vande Kolk will discuss his trajectory from research at the Nuclear Science Laboratory to international strategy at Northrop Grumman. This seminar will explore career paths outside academia, particularly in the federal workforce and the defense industry. Attendees will gain insight into how the technical rigor of a PhD translates into success in the private and public sectors.
